This book is about a girl called Emeline. Emeline loves animals. She lives in a small cottage by the sea. She lives with her sister Victoria, her mother and usually her father and brother. Emeline's father and brother work at sea and hunt seals and whales for a living. Their boat is called the Mary Rose. One day Emeline was walking along the beach, she was going along her favourite track, when suddenly she sore a dead mother seal lying on the rocks, Emeline was shocked, she could not bare to look at the lonely looking seal anymore, she walked away in hurt ,she felt sorry for the seal. After a few minutes, Emeline spots a injured baby seal, her heart thumping, Emeline walks over to the pup, and she sits down beside the small seal, it did not move at all, she was to late... Then she whispered ''I'm sorry little cruin, I did try''Emeline knew what she had to do, the pup had to be taken care of whether her father liked it or not. She feed it with her mother's best glove, then she put Jesse the goat's milk into the glove, and put holes in the finger tips. Emeline did this until the pup was old enough to move on to fish. The Mary Rose had gone missing for a few days, they realized that the Mary Rose had capsized or crashed. Some bodies had been found, but some were still missing, one of the people missing was Emeline's father. This tragedy worried the small family. One day Emeline went to feed the seal pup she played with the pup,one side of her was sad,and the other was happy to be with the seal. She walked home wondering, wondering if her father was okay or not. She entered in to the cottage, and could not believe her eyes, she saw her father and her brother sitting on the couch, and her father had his arm in a sling. Oh how happy Emeline was! She was simply jumping for joy! She carefully gave her father a warming hug. She had joyful tears rolling down her cheeks. But what about the seal? now her father is home he will be suspicious. One day she was feeding the seal and she saw a figure standing on the cliff above her,she blinked twice, and the figure was gone.Later that afternoon she wondered if the figure she saw at the beach was a person,or if it was just the reflection of the sea making unusual and weird figures. The next morning,Emeline woke early and got into her morning clothes and went to feed and milk Jesse. She wandered into the garden and found her brother Samuel standing by Jesse waiting for her, ''I saw you on the beach yesterday'' Samuel said ''So there was a person standing on the cliff it was not the water's reflections'' Emeline said to herself. ''You really shouldn't have gone and done it Emeline'' he paused for a moment and continued ''You know that you can't do that'' ''I did not mean to''said Emeline ''Just like you did not mean to save a seagull with a broken wing, and the beaver with the bent leg!'' ''OKAY OKAY!'' Emeline exclaimed ''Maybe I look after lots of animals but I just can't help it please don't tell papa!'' ''please'' Emeline begged ''okay'' he said ''But if you don't tell him I will'' he seamed very serious Emeline agreed.
One day Emeline was playing with the seal and the seal followed her she said to the seal ''You can't come with me'' she turned around and kept walking she turned around again and the seal was gone she sat on the beach wondering, now the sun was setting and Emeline was worried about the seal pup. Then Emeline heard her mother calling her name ''Come along Emeline it's getting late '' Emeline followed her mother up the track and heard a sort of music and it was a high and silver, clear and ringing And once again she was swimming with the little cruin diving up and down through the clear waves, ducking and diving through the silvery sea of the full moon and all while singing to the seals,it was the calling of the cruins.
